Game Maker is a program made by yoyogames.com. You use it to create 2D games of pretty much anything that you want. It is very easy to use, there are plenty of tutorials out there and the Lite version is free [Basically that just means you cant create 3D games without paying $15 or something]. I dunno if it's multi-platform as I only have Windows...
You can download it here:http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/
The current version it Game Maker 7.0 Lite/Pro depending on whether or not you want to pay.
At my school the current Design Technology topic we are studying is the making of games. How awesome is that? We get to just make games during our lessons of tech using Game Maker.
I have created several games using the program for my tech. Most are just tutorials I followed. I was going to post them here, but then I couldn't. So I tried zipping them up, and still couldn't. And now I've found a website:

If you need the Guest Password, its 'stykzrocks' without the apostrophes.
They are numbered in the order of which I made them. That is also the level of in-depthness each game has. With '1' being a verrrrry simple game. Remember that <F1> will open the help file for each game and they are strongly suggested to be read.
