Weird... ok, let's get some info (if you've already given this to me in the past, I apologize - I'll keep better track for next time):

  • OS: You're on Win 7 Ultimate, right?
  • How much RAM do you have installed?
  • Do you have any antispyware/antimalware installed? If so, can you check to see if Stykz might have flagged as a threat and either quarantined or added to a "do not launch" list?
  • When you ran the installer, did you pick a specific location to install Stykz into or did you use the default location?
  • I saw you check the Task Manager *before* you launched Stykz, but if you could leave it open on the Processes tab and *then* launch Stykz and see if it shows up there (even if it's just for a second), and let me know.
  • What was the last version of Stykz that worked on this machine? RC4 (205)?
  • Was your PC in the same configuration as it is now (OS, RAM, etc.) when you installed the last version of Stykz that worked? Or has your config changed since then? (That is, if you had RC4 running on your machine that *was* Vista, say, and you upgraded to Win 7 and continued to use RC4 just fine, but then had the problem installing and running 1.0, let me know that you upgraded to Win 7 after RC4).
  • Right-click on the Stykz shortcut on the desktop and choose "Open file location"... when the folder opens, confirm that you have a "Local Components" folder next to the Stykz executable.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know, but answers to the above will help me track this down.

Try running it as administrator. Right click and choose run as administrator. Probably won't do anything but it's worth a try.

Sorry uBiCray... lost track of this one... Try completely uninstalling Stykz (see below) and then downloading and reinstalling RC4 to see if it works again - here's the link: Stykz RC4 Build 205. If it *works*, then it's definitely something that's changed in Stykz. If it *doesn't work*, then it's something that changed in your system somehow.

Here's how to completely uninstall Stykz:

  1. If you have created your own figures and saved them to the Library, you want to back them up - go to the Stykz Library folder (it's at C:\Users\<yourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Stykz\Library), and copy or move the Figures folder somewhere safe.
  2. Check to see if you have a "Stykz For Windows" folder on the desktop. If you do, throw it away (unless you added files to it, in which case move them out to a safe location before deleting this folder).
  3. Check to see if you have a "Stykz" folder in your Program Files folder (you should). If so, throw it away.
  4. Pop up the Start menu and see if you have a "Stykz" group (folder) listed there - if so, right click on it and choose "Delete" to get rid of it.
  5. Delete the Stykz preferences folder (it's at C:\Users\<yourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Stykz).
  6. If you're comfortable with editing the Registry, open RegEdit, look under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, locate the following subkeys and delete them (if you're not comfortable, then don't bother since they shouldn't affect the problem you're getting):
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.stykz
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Stykz.DocFile
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.styk
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Stykz.FigureFile
  7. Finally, empty the Recycle Bin, restart your computer (just to be on the safe side), download the RC4 installer and re-run it, and let me know how it goes.

Wow... I'm stumped. The only things left that I can think of are (a) trying to launch Stykz directly from the Program Files/Stykz folder and not from the shortcut, and (b) rebooting into Safe Mode and try launching Stykz that way and see if it works, and finally (c) trying it with another similarly equipped computer with the same OS. After that, though, I don't know what to suggest... you're the only one who has reported this issue, and lots of people are on Win 7 and using Stykz just fine. So there's something on your computer that's interfering in some way.
