What frame delay are you using? If you want your anim to look smoother, you want to have a lower frame delay (higher frame rate) and slightly small movements.

I use a delay of 5 for the sake of compatibility with firefox. I also use a frame rate of 15 to 20. Is there a particular frame delay that looks good in any browser?

That's because most browsers run on mozilla's gecko engine. Safari and Internet Explorer don't use the gecko engine.
